Chapter Fifteen

Azure stared out the bedroom window of the safe house. She’d gone through the insurance papers she’d taken from Celeste’s and found she was the beneficiary. So she’d called the hospital and told them where to send Celeste’s body. She would have her cremated and then spread her ashes someplace she thought Celeste might want to be buried.

Celeste had always wanted to go to the Virgin Islands, so maybe she’d take them there. She could if she made it through this.

They wanted to sell her instead of just killing her. She was too old for a trafficking ring—unless what they wanted was her genes. But how could they even know about her genes? She didn’t go around screaming that she was a gem witch. She certainly didn’t go around talking about her great-great grandmother Vesta Coronado.

Her father’s family didn’t even want anything to do with her. She’d seen Vesta a total of ten times in her entire life and the woman had given her a beautiful book of shadows for her thirteenth birthday. The book contained the legends of the gems and her family’s connection to them.

There were spells in the book along with potions. Vesta had told her to guard her heritage well, and never discuss it even with her mother. Her mother was from a powerful bloodline too, but not as powerful as her father’s.

Azure ran a frustrated hand through her hair and paced away from the window. She exited her bedroom and stopped in her tracks when she heard Kerra’s voice.

“How did it go?” Cassia asked. “Did the woman talk?”

“Yep. Bali told me about the attack. Is Azure okay?” Kerra demanded quietly. “Was she hurt?”

“Not that I can tell. She has some kick ass magick plus she was protected well by Kensal’s contact,” Cassia answered.

“Cassia said you guys think it might be Baker’s partner behind the trafficking,” Sapphire said softly.

“Could be but we don’t know yet,” Kerra answered.

She had been right. Kerra and her agency had been working on this before Celeste had gotten involved.

“They wanted me because they thought I was one of the mythical gem witches. They thought I could save the brown bat race,” Sapphire said.

“Over ninety percent of their offspring die within hours of their birth,” Cassia said. “They thought her genes could stop that.”

“Are you a gem witch? And don’t lie, Sapphire,” Kerra said in a hard tone.

“Watch yourself, Ker,” Cassia warned.

“You dragged us into this mess four months ago,” Kerra snapped. “I need answers—we all do if we’re going to take these assholes down once and for all.”

“Then, go talk to your woman,” Cassia snarled. “She’s the one they’re after not mine.”

“Don’t be stupid,” Kerra snarled and a low chirp escaped Cassia as she widened her legs in a battle ready stance. Kerra took a step toward her. “How long do you think they’ll be satisfied with Azure? You know predatory brown bats, Cass. They won’t let Sapphire go as long as they are alive and have a reason to use her to further their financial status.
